Beach, gently sloping strip of land bordering an ocean or other body of water. Beaches form by the action of rivers, waves, currents, tides, and wind, and they are usually covered with sand or gravel.

Some of the world’s major recreational beaches are barrier beaches, which are formed when the action of waves and currents is not strong enough to wash sand fully to the shore. The sand is instead deposited in the water near the shore, forming a sandbar. The bar may grow outward until strong waves pile the sand high enough that it rises above water level, forming a barrier beach. Barrier beaches are generally elongated islands, but the beach may be joined to the mainland as sand and silt accumulates in the water between the two land areas. Well-known barrier beaches include those at Miami Beach, Florida; Atlantic City, New Jersey; and Coney Island in New York City.

Other famous recreational beaches are located at Acapulco on the western coast of Mexico, at Cannes on the Mediterranean coast of France, and at Sydney on the southeastern coast of Australia. Beaches along the islands of Hawaii in the United States have helped generate a large tourist industry in that state. Sediments that accumulate along the sea or lake shores, the configuration and contours of which depend on the action of coastal processes, the kinds of sediment involved, and the rate of delivery of this sediment. There are three different kinds of beaches. The first occurs as a sediment strip bordering a rocky or cliffy coast; the second is the outer margin of a plain of marine or fluvial accumulation (free beaches); and the third, of fairly peculiar character, consists of the narrow sediment barriers stretching for dozens or even hundreds of kilometres parallel to the general direction of the coast. These barriers separate lagoons from the open sea and generally are dissected by some tidal inlets. Certain sediment forelands, such as spits, points, and tombolos (which connect an island with a mainland), also occasionally are called beaches.

Coast, geographical term that refers to the zone of contact between a land surface and a large body of water. The term is usually applied to a land area that borders a sea or an ocean, such as the Atlantic coast or the Pacific coast. In common usage, the term coast is frequently interchanged with the term shore. However, shore is also applied to the land bordering smaller bodies of water such as a lake shore, where use of the term coast would be inappropriate.

Seashore (seaside), boundary between the land and the sea. This boundary is also called the shore or the shoreline.

Shoreline, seaside - A variety of landforms exists at the seashore, including sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, tide pools (also called tidal pools), and coral reefs. Each of these landforms is shaped by the wind, waves, tides, and currents. The wide variety of landforms yields a variety of habitats, or environments for plants and animals. For example, in shallow shore areas with low waves and weak currents, sea grasses flourish. They provide protected habitats where many species of animals lay their eggs and the young can grow in size and strength before facing the harsher environment of the open ocean. By contrast, in areas with stronger currents or waves, burrowing animals, such as clams, dig themselves into the mud or sand to avoid the vigorous water movement. However, these animals also depend on the moving water to supply food in the form of smaller animals and plant and animal debris suspended in the water.

Seaside (Florida), planned resort community in northwestern Florida, located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in Walton County. The beachside community was founded in 1981 by Florida native Robert Davis. Miami-based architects Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk incorporated pastel-colored Victorian cottages, picket fences, and narrow streets in order to evoke a sense of community common to small towns of the past. Seaside has received national attention for its innovative design. Area, 30 hectares (80 acres).

Seaside (California), city, Monterey County, western California, on Monterey Bay; established 1900, incorporated as a city 1954. It is a residential community and a popular resort situated in a fruit-growing area.

Thailand has a long and intricate coastline measuring 3,200 km (2,000 mi). It faces the Andaman Sea in the west and the Gulf of Thailand in the east and south. The coast is characterized both by rocky shoreline and more gentle shorelines with mangrove swamps, beaches, and offshore coral reefs. Resorts built on Thailand’s beaches are popular tourist destinations, and some, such as Pattaya in the southeast and Hua Hin in the south, have become particularly famous.

Antalya, city in southwestern Turkey, capital of Antalya province, located on the Gulf of Antalya. The city is the largest urban area on Turkey’s central Mediterranean coast. Tourists are attracted to Antalya’s beaches and nearby ancient Greek ruins. In addition to tourism, light industry is important, as is agriculture—particularly the growing of citrus fruits. The city’s busy port has direct connections for trade with Crete (Kríti), Cyprus, and Egypt. Antalya’s airport is the busiest on the Turkish Mediterranean, with direct flights to many European cities. Roads connect Antalya with nearby towns and with larger cities over the rugged Taurus Mountains to the north.

Bali, island, southern Indonesia, one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, in the Indian Ocean. It is situated between the island of Java to the west, from which it is separated by Bali Strait, and the island of Lombok to the east from which it is separated by Lombok Strait.

Florida - Saint Petersburg, city in Pinellas County, west central Florida. The city is located on Pinellas Peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It is linked by bridges with Tampa and Bradenton, and by causeways with a string of islets in the Gulf of Mexico. Puerto Rico has become a major vacation destination because of its fine year-round weather and air and sea transportation links; hotels, guest houses, and condominium developments dot the island's coastline. In the 1990s there was a boom in new hotel construction, in part because of tax incentives and financing assistance from the island's government. Between one and two million visitors register each year at Puerto Rico's hotels and inns, and vast numbers of cruise ship passengers stop over annually.
